Note: Scale, projection, and size of maps is listed where available. Inset maps are noted. Many maps have photos and/or illustrations which are described in a note in the record; you can find records of these illustrations by searching with keywords that describe what they depict. Most NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC magazine map supplements are two-sided, and each side is described in a separate record; these records are linked to one another.

Grantees, Explorers-in-Residence, Emerging Explorers, and Research Journal

Note: Specific information about research and expedition proposals and grant amounts is not included in NGS Publications Index, which contains records of articles and departments by and about grantees and Explorers-in-Residence. It also contains records for articles in the National Geographic Research Journal, a magazine published from 1985 to 1994. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC articles and departments that are the result of a research grant are notated in the magazine; such notations are included in the NGS Publications Index in the records for those articles and departments. The NGS Publications Index also contains records for a 21-volume compilation of research reports published from 1890 to 1983. These reports were written by the grantees and can be retrieved with a search for "research reports."

  • To locate articles about NGS research grants, select "All of these words" and input the following term in the search box:

    "NGS research grant"

  • To locate articles about grants awarded by the Expeditions Council, input the following term:

    "NGS expeditions grant"

  • To find photos of grantees, add ill to the person's name:
